The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway has announced the arrival of Class 02 No. 003, giving the heritage line another option when steam traction cannot be used. The railway published its announcement on 23 September 2026.
Originally numbered D2853, the Yorkshire Engine Company 0-4-0 diesel-hydraulic shunter is owned by a Middy member. It was one of 20 built for British Railways in 1961. The railway says its role will be to help maintain services during locomotive failures or periods of high fire risk.
An idea for a heritage layout
There is a useful modelling lesson in this modest arrival. A preserved railway can have an operational reason for keeping a small diesel alongside its steam fleet. That offers more variety than simply parking every locomotive outside the shed.
On a model, a change of motive power could become part of the operating session: bring the diesel out, move the steam locomotive clear and prepare the next service. This is a suggested modelling scenario, rather than a description of a particular day’s working at the Middy.
Read the railway’s original announcement. Anyone planning a visit should check its current programme; the announcement does not promise that No. 003 will work on a particular date.
