Halloween may be the weekend for things that go bump in the night, but I would rather listen to a goods train rumbling through a beautifully modelled station. Besides, the scariest thing at a model railway exhibition is usually the moment “I’m only looking” becomes “Have you got that with sound?”
For Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 2026, Cardiff, Spalding and Newbury make a tempting shortlist. These are my picks from the advertised programmes: places where I would happily lose track of time while insisting I was conducting important research for the next layout.
Cardiff: a good excuse to linger by the layouts
The 38th Cardiff Model Railway Show takes place at Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground, CF11 9XR, on both days. Opening hours are 10am–5pm Saturday and 10am–4pm Sunday. Admission is £10, with accompanied under-15s free.
Two entries on the organiser’s list particularly catch my eye. Alston recreates the atmosphere of the Cumbrian terminus in N gauge, using scratch-built buildings and hand-built track. At the other end of the size spectrum, Blackgang offers an Isle of Wight-inspired railway in Gauge 3, with battery-powered, radio-controlled locomotives.
That is exactly the sort of contrast I enjoy at a show. One layout encourages me to consider what will fit on a modest baseboard; the next encourages me to consider whether the furniture is strictly necessary.

Spalding: bring a notebook, and allow for freight delays
Spalding’s exhibition runs on both days at Springfields Exhibition Centre, Lincolnshire, PE12 6ET, with around 30 layouts advertised. On-the-door admission is £14 for adults and £2 for children aged 5–16; under-fives enter free. The club confirms general admission from 10am on both days.
I would make a point of finding East Coast Cement. Hornby Magazine’s 32ft OO layout combines an East Coast Main Line setting with a cement works, aggregate sidings and full-length trains. Watching a long freight work through a convincing scene is a fine way to discover that your “quick look” has lasted twenty minutes.
The programme also lists Llanwyddyn, a TT:120 layout set in a fictional Mid-Wales town in the early 1990s. With so much attention on TT:120 products, seeing the scale used in a complete layout is particularly appealing. I would be looking at the space around the trains as much as the trains themselves: platform lengths, scenery depth and how naturally everything fits together.

Newbury: a Saturday stop with plenty of operating interest
For a one-day outing, Newbury Model Railway Club’s exhibition is at St Bartholomew’s School, RG14 6JP, on Saturday 31 October, 10am–4.30pm. The club says admission is paid on the door by cash or card, with no advance tickets.
The line-up includes the club’s Lambourn, depicting the local branch terminus in the 1940s and 1950s, and Fence Houses NCB, with coalfield shunting in OO. Those are the sorts of layouts that tempt me to stay for a complete operating sequence. There is something wonderfully absorbing about watching wagons being put in the right place, even when I cannot organise my own workbench.

My plan: fewer rushed laps, more proper conversations
Whichever show you choose, I would leave room in the day to ask how something was made. A convincing embankment, a reliable uncoupler or a neat lighting arrangement can be more useful inspiration than another locomotive purchase. I appreciate that this is a dangerous sentence to write within sight of a trade stand.
Check the organisers’ latest travel advice, opening times and line-ups before setting off, as arrangements can change. You can also browse The Model Line’s events calendar for more options.
And if a new wagon somehow follows you home, I suggest calling it a seasonal freight movement. Happy modelling, and enjoy the weekend.
