Great Electric Train Show 2026: a practical visitor guide

The Great Electric Train Show returns to Arena MK, also known as Marshall Arena, in Milton Keynes on 10–11 October 2026. It is a show to take your time over: carefully selected layouts, major manufacturers, specialist traders and modelling demonstrations offer plenty to see beyond a quick circuit of the hall.

This guide combines the organiser’s published 2026 information with Warren’s experience of previous visits. Personal observations about queues, crowds and the atmosphere are advice for planning, rather than promises about this year’s arrangements. Information checked 12 September 2026.

Saturday visitors: plan your parking before travelling

Do not plan to use the venue car park during Saturday 10 October. The organiser’s 5 September update says daytime parking will be unavailable because of a football match at Stadium MK. It recommends paid public parking around Milton Keynes Central station, using MK9 1LA for the station area, followed by the free show shuttle. On Sunday 11 October, venue parking is advertised as available at local rates. This later, date-specific announcement takes precedence over the general parking wording still visible on some event pages.

Opening times and tickets

• Saturday 10 October: 10am–5pm.
• Sunday 11 October: 10am–4pm.
• Advance-ticket entry: from 9.30am on both days.
• Standard adult admission: £18 advance or £23 on the door.
• Children aged 5–16: Saturday £9 advance or £11.50 on the door. On Sunday, up to two children enter free with each paying adult.

Weekend and VIP options are also available. Check the selected ticket’s conditions and any delivery charges before paying. The Sunday offer is for 11 October 2026; an introductory line on the main website still refers to October 12. Arrive early, but prepare for an outdoor queue

Warren’s advice from previous visits is to arrive early and carry an umbrella or waterproof if rain is forecast: the entrance queues he encountered were outside and unsheltered. Keep your ticket easy to reach and allow time for the journey from your parking space or shuttle stop.

Early arrival does not guarantee a quiet hall. Popular layouts have attracted crowds from the start of previous shows, and the organiser warns that visitors buying on-the-day tickets may have to wait at busy times. Advance booking gives an earlier admission time, but should not be treated as a guarantee of immediate entry or an unobstructed view.

Getting there by train and using the free shuttle

Milton Keynes Central is the station served by the advertised show shuttle. The organiser confirms a free Stagecoach service on both days. Its September update specifies buses every 15 minutes from 8am on Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sunday. Check the day-specific timetable for the pickup point, departures and return arrangements before booking your railway connections.

Leave a comfortable margin for the return bus and your train home, particularly when many visitors leave together. Layouts worth making time for

The organiser advertises more than 30 selected layouts and over 50 trade stands. Warren’s attraction to the show is the mix of ambitious modelling, fine scenic detail and inventive ideas: it rewards slowing down to watch how a layout works, rather than simply taking a photograph and moving on.

Announced highlights include Making Tracks 6, Pete Waterman and the Railnuts’ new Blisworth project, and the return of Deepcar, Nottingham Model Railway Society’s Woodhead-route layout. The September announcement also adds Eric French’s Underground-inspired Cassiobury, Dan Evason’s new O-gauge Brimfield Works, Shadwell East from High Wycombe and District Model Railway Society’s junior section, Stewart’s Lane TMD and Alford Brewery.

Start with two or three priorities, then explore the rest. If a favourite is crowded, return later rather than spending the whole morning waiting for one viewing position. Look beyond your usual gauge: the techniques behind scenery, lighting and operation can be useful on very different layouts. The announced layout list appears below, with further details on the organiser’s layout page, currently headed for 2026.

Traders, manufacturers and smaller specialists

The existing confirmed trade list below includes major names such as Hornby Hobbies, Accurascale, Cavalex Models, Heljan and Revolution Trains, alongside retailers and specialist suppliers. Warren particularly recommends allowing time for the smaller stands: previous visits have turned up distinctive products and ideas among compact, sometimes single-table businesses.

Bring a short shopping list, relevant measurements and product references, but leave time to browse. A small scenic accessory, kit or tool may be more useful to your next project than a larger impulse purchase. Ask a supplier about compatibility before buying electrical equipment. Food, drinks and taking a break

The published visitor information lists indoor bar catering from 9.30am to 4pm and an outside catering van from 8.30am to 2pm, with contactless payment only. These hours do not cover the whole of Saturday’s show, so plan lunch rather than assuming food will still be available near closing.

Warren has also used food outlets around the station on previous visits. Treat that as a possible stop on your journey, not a confirmed programme of event food stalls: check what is open on the day. A proper break gives you time to review purchases, compare notes and decide which layouts to revisit.

YouTubers, demonstrations and awards

Warren recalls YouTuber meet-and-greets and award presentations at previous editions. A confirmed 2026 meet-and-greet or awards timetable was not found in the official pages and latest announcement checked for this guide. Do not plan around a particular creator or presentation time until it is announced. A layout associated with a well-known modeller is not, by itself, confirmation of a personal appearance or signing session.

Expert modelling demonstrations are advertised. Check the final show guide and notices on arrival for named demonstrators, times and any additional programme announcements.

Is the Great Electric Train Show suitable for young children?

Children are welcome, and the Sunday admission offer makes a family visit less expensive. However, we have not found dedicated children’s activities advertised in the 2026 official visitor information, ticket pages or latest programme announcement checked on 12 September. We found no confirmed children’s workshop, play area or have-a-go programme in those sources. This means such activities are unconfirmed, not that none will take place.

Shadwell East is being exhibited by a junior club section, which may inspire young modellers, but a junior-built exhibit is not the same as a hands-on activity for visitors. Warren did not encounter children’s activities on his visit last year; that observation cannot establish what was available elsewhere in the hall.

Our recommendation is to plan around your child’s interests. A child who enjoys watching trains and spotting scenic details may find plenty to enjoy. For a very young visitor who needs frequent hands-on play, a crowded full-day viewing-and-shopping visit may be a harder fit. Consider a shorter visit, regular breaks and a simple spotting game. Ask about layout viewing heights, pushchair access and quiet spaces if these matter to your family, rather than assuming they are provided.

Before booking specifically for children’s activities, contact Julie Hawes, the organiser’s general-enquiries contact, to ask what is planned for their ages. Sunday’s free-child offer does not guarantee a quieter hall.

Access and a comfortable visit

The organiser offers one free accompanying carer ticket for an eligible disabled visitor, collected at the main entrance desk with the specified documentation. Check the official access and carer policy before travelling. If you need shuttle accessibility information, seating or assistance with queueing, ask the organiser about those arrangements in advance.

A simple plan for your day

1. Check your ticket, the forecast and the correct day’s shuttle or parking arrangements.
2. On arrival, find your priority layouts and check the programme for timed sessions.
3. Watch layouts, visit specialist traders and take a break before catering finishes.
4. Return to crowded favourites when a viewing opportunity opens up.
5. Leave enough time for your return shuttle and onward train.
