There is always something encouraging about seeing a project move from drawings to a physical model. Dapol has shared the first engineering prototypes of its N gauge LMS Period III 57ft non-lavatory suburban coaches, in an update dated 16 September 2026.
The photographs include a Driving Brake Third, All Third and Composite. These are development samples, so they show progress rather than the finished models we will eventually put on the layout.
What still needs attention?
Dapol reports some component-fit issues and underframe warping associated with removal from the moulds. The coupling mechanism also needs a small redesign to improve reliability.
The manufacturer is working with the factory on those refinements and expects another set of engineering prototypes later this year. This update does not establish a firm retail delivery date.
For modellers following the project, the candid explanation is useful. Appearance matters, but coaches also need to couple and run reliably through the everyday pointwork of a working layout. The next samples should therefore be an interesting milestone. For now, these photographs offer a welcome first look at the models taking shape.
