There is a point in November when a warm exhibition hall, a good cup of tea and a beautifully operated goods yard become a very persuasive combination. I can usually resist buying another locomotive. Resisting a convincing excuse to spend a day watching them is considerably harder.
For Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026, my shortlist takes in Tolworth, Darlington and Elgin. These are three alternatives for different parts of the country, rather than an ambitious attempt to visit all three. Even my enthusiasm has yet to acquire a helicopter.
Tolworth: main-line spectacle and useful workshop ideas
Tolworth Showtrain runs at Tolworth Recreation Centre, Fullers Way North, Surrey, KT6 7LQ, from 10am–5pm on Saturday and 10am–4pm on Sunday. Admission is £10 for adults, £3 for children and £21 for a family of two adults and two children. On Sunday, one child enters free with each paying adult.
I would head for Hills of the North, with its OO-gauge interpretation of Shap Summit in the 1950s, then compare it with Wantage, a P4 recreation of Oxfordshire in 1923. Different settings and different approaches are half the pleasure of an exhibition: you arrive thinking about one project and leave mentally rebuilding another.
The advertised demonstrations cover DCC diagnostics, scenic modelling, soldering and weathering. I would make time for those before the trade stands absorb the rest of the day. There is also a free shuttle bus from Surbiton station; check the organiser’s timetable before travelling.

Darlington: proof that a railway need not take over the house
Micro North is a Saturday-only outing at Hopetown Darlington, McNay Street, DL3 6SW, on 7 November, 10am–4.30pm. The venue advertises more than 30 micro layouts in the historic Carriage Works, alongside specialist trade stands. Admission is £7 for ages 16 and over; children aged 0–15 and carers enter free. Pre-booking is recommended.
This would be my pick for anyone whose modelling ambitions currently exceed their available shelf space. Small layouts make you look closely at the choices: where the railway disappears, how a siding earns its place and how a few carefully arranged buildings suggest a much larger world.
I would be taking notes on operation as well as scenery. A compact railway with an absorbing shunting sequence can hold my attention far longer than its dimensions suggest. It may also provide useful evidence that the next project really will fit in the spare room. Whether that evidence survives contact with the household is another matter.

Elgin: railway inspiration with a wider modelling mix
Elgin Model Railway Club’s Modelfair takes place at Moray Sports Centre, Linkwood Road, Elgin, IV30 8AR, on 7–8 November. Published visitor listings give opening hours of 10am–5pm Saturday and 10am–4pm Sunday, with adult admission £8. Check the organiser’s latest poster for the full ticket options.
The advertised railway line-up includes Dent Station, Grantown on Spey (East) and Kingsbridge Fuel Depot. The wider programme brings in other modelling interests, including aircraft, boats, Meccano and dioramas.
That variety appeals to me. A convincing weathered surface or cleverly lit building does not stop being useful inspiration because it belongs to another hobby. I would happily come away with a new scenery technique and no extra rolling stock. This is an entirely sincere intention, best recorded before entering the sales area.

Leave room for one good conversation
My plan would be simple: choose a show, allow enough time to watch a complete operating sequence and ask someone how they achieved a detail that catches the eye. A useful answer can keep a project moving long after the exhibition closes.
Check opening times, line-ups and travel arrangements with organisers before setting off. For more options, explore The Model Line’s events calendar. Enjoy the weekend, and leave a little room in the bag. For the notebook, obviously.
